Clifton, New Jersey

Situated a mere 10 miles from the “Big Apple,” Clifton is a delightfully diverse community that does not fit the mold of the
average commuter town. While a sizable number of residents do commute to “the city,” a majority of residents work within driving distance of their homes. Some
residents hardly ever go to New York, and in fact there are even some who've
lived in Clifton all their lives and have never even set foot in the metropolis
only 35 minutes away. That may sound incredulous, but trust me as a former
resident of Clifton, it's true.

The Borough of Rumson is an upscale and historic community that caught the eyes
of English settlers as far back as 1663. During the Victorian Age, it was the
summer playground of New York's elite due to its proximity to New York City.
Today Rumson is an upscale suburb, home to New York City commuters and
celebrities alike.

Mention Fort Lee, New Jersey and two things come to mind. One is its proximity
to the George Washington Bridge, and secondly, its heritage as the birthplace
of the modern film industry and of the Palisades amusement park.

Asbury Park, one of the old showplaces of the Jersey Shore and a town that in
its heyday rivaled Atlantic City, has seen its fortunes rise and fall (and rise
again). Once viewed as a city in decline, Asbury Park benefited greatly from
the housing bubble of the early 2000s, and seemed poised for a renaissance of
sorts. Today, the future of development and gentrification in Asbury Park is
less clear, as the tanked economy has forced many of the residential projects
in the pipeline into a kind of limbo, their funding tied up or evaporated and
unit sales sluggish at best.

While some people may only know the town of Mahwah because of a glancing mention in the Bruce Springsteen song "Johnny 99," the city has had a long and distinguished history. Some know it for its parklands, some for the historic Ford plant, and sports fans remember it for 25 years of great tennis matches at the A&P Classic, which served as a warm-up for the U.S.

It would be difficult to find an area of New Jersey that isn't steeped in cultural history. The northeastern seaboard saw the majority of the United States' growth at our country's inception and, it's no wonder that "The Military Capital of the American Revolution" is right in the heart of New Jersey. Morristown holds this honor, and that's just one of the many things that makes this interesting little hamlet worth investigating.

When someone mentions Trenton, most people probably just think of the city of just under half a million souls as the seat of New Jersey's state government—maybe as a former industrial hub of the Northeast, if they know their history—and not much more. But like a lot of towns in central New Jersey and all over the tri-state area, Trenton is steeped in rich colonial history, loaded with cultural reminders of two revolutions: the Revolutionary War, and the Industrial Revolution. This month, we take a closer look at Trenton and its historic Old Mill Hill district, a community-within-a-community with a commitment to preserve and protect its history and architectural beauty.
